A story from South SumatraOnce upon a time, there was a kingdom in the area of South Sumatra led by a king. The king had a very beautiful daughter named Siti Fatimah. Besides her beauty, the princess was also well-known for her kindness and good manners. Many young men fell in love with her. However, they dared not approach her because the king wanted his daughter to marry a rich a prince of China, named Tan Bun An, came to the kingdom to talk about the trades of the two kingdom. The king wanted to collaborate with Tan Bun An as long as Tan Bun An shared his profit to the king. Tan Bun An agreed with the king’s deal. He decided to stay in South Sumatra for several months. One day, when Tan Bun An was in the palace, he encountered Princess Siti Fatimah and instantly fell for her beauty. To his delight, the princess returned his affection. The two then promised to meet each other whenever Tan Bun An came to the palace. They became lovers. After a few months, Tan Bun An decided to propose marriage to Siti Fatimah. He asked the king for his daughter’s hand. “Your Majesty, I want to marry your daughter, Princess Siti Fatimah. We have met for a long time and we suit each other perfectly,” said the king, who was determined to marry his daughter only to a wealthy man, stated his terms. “You may marry her if you pay me the bride price.”“What is the bride price, Your Majesty?” asked Tan Bun An.“Bring me nine jars full of gold. After the jars are in my palace, you may marry my daughter,” replied the king.“I agree. I will write a letter to my parents asking them to send nine jars of gold to South Sumatra,” said Tan Bun letter from the king of China finally arrived. He was willing to send nine jars of gold as the bride price for Siti Fatimah. The lovers were overjoyed. Their dream had almost come few months later, the ship from China carrying the bride price arrived. Tan Bun An and Siti Fatimah went to the Musi River to welcome the ship. Tan Bun An rushed on board and immediately looked for the jar. He opened the cover of a jar, and behold, instead of the gold he expected, it was filled with rotten vegetables! How frustrated Tan Bun An was! Enraged at his father, who played trick on him, he threw the jar into the water. He opened the covers of all the other jars. Seeing the same rotten vegetables, he tossed them to the water. However, when he threw the last jar, the jar crashed into the vessel wall. Pieces of gold, hidden underneath the rotten vegetables, were revealed. Tan Bun An was aghast. It turned out his parents intentionally put rotten vegetables over the pieces of gold to hide them from pirates. Realizing his mistake, Tan Bun An quickly jumped into the sea to retrieve the jars. Siti Fatimah saw the whole incident. She waited anxiously for Tan Bun An to come out of the water. However, he did not appear. “Prince Tan Bun An, where are you? Please return safely to me, or I will look for you in the sea,” pleaded the princess.“Please, princess, don’t!” said her maids.“I must! My maids, if I don’t come back, there shall rise a mound in the middle of the sea. You shall know that it is our graves,” said the she jumped into the water and never came back. The next day, in the middle of the Musi River, a mound appeared, rising higher and higher. It was named Kemaro Island, which means “the island of drought”, because it was never drowned by the river even when the water overflowed.

It is said that during the era of the Srivijaya kingdom, ruled a wise king who had a beautiful daughter named Siti upon a time, a group of merchants from China led by Tam Bun An, came to the Sriwijaya kingdom. Tam Bun An heard news from the local community about the beauty of Siti Fatimah, a daughter of the king of Sriwijaya. On the advice of the ship's captain, Tam Bun An then went to the palace to meet Siti Fatimah. They then came to the palace carrying the procession of musical instruments along with the lion dance. Seeing the excitement in front of the palace, the king's daughter immediately came out to take a look. Siti Fatimah was very impressed with the lion dance performance. Tam Bun An was finally able to meet Siti Fatimah. They then became acquainted with each other. Since then the two of them often held meetings. Over time the seeds of love emerged between the two of them. Tam Bun An Wants To Apply For Siti Fatimah Raja Sriwijaya found out about his son's relationship with Tam Bun An, then called Tam Bun An. In front of the King, Tam Bun An expressed his intention to propose to Siti Fatimah. However, the King objected because of differences in customs. “Great King. I intend to apply for my daughter, Siti Fatimah, to become my wife. I really love him. " said Tam Bun An. "Young people, we have different customs. I also don't want my child to be brought to China. " said the King. "If that is the wish of the King, then I am willing to stay in the country of Sriwijaya." said Tam Bun An who had fallen in love with Siti Fatimah. "Okay then I agree to marry my son to you. But to prove your seriousness, you must hand over nine large jars of pure gold. " said the King. Tam Bun An was pleased to hear the king's explanation. He agreed to hand over nine large jars of pure gold. Tam Bun An immediately sent a letter to his parents in mainland China via a dove, to send nine large jars of gold, so he could propose to the girl he loved. Soon afterwards, a reply letter came from the parents of Tam Bun An who stated that he would immediately send the nine gold jars he requested. Tam Bun An's parents immediately prepared their child's request. Because the journey was very far, worried about the pirates in the middle of the sea, his parents put rotten vegetables on the top of the golden jar to trick the pirates. A few months later, the ship carrying nine jars of gold from Tam Bun An's parents arrived at the Royal pier. Tam Bun An invited Raja and Siti Fatimah to board the ship. Tam Bun An immediately opened the gold jar. To his surprise, he found that it contained only rotten vegetables. He then opened another jar and found that it had the same contents, rotten vegetables. Feeling angry, Tam Bun An then threw the jars into the Musi River. One by one he threw the jars into the river. When he was about to throw the ninth urn, the jar fell on the floor and broke and scattered to take out a pure gold bar. Knowing this, Tam Bun An regretted that he had thrown away the eight gold jars. Siti Fatimah tries to calm her lover. Likewise, King Sriwijaya tried to calm Tam Bun An. The king said that Tam Bun An could marry his daughter because the conditions had been met. "Lord King. I am very sorry to have thrown away the gold jars. Let me go into the river to get the gold back. " Tam Bun An immediately jumped into the river even though everyone had stopped him. The legend of the Kemaro Island of the Musi River The people on the dock waited anxiously, because after all this time, Tam Bun An had not yet surfaced. Siti Fatimah looked very panicked. He looks like he is about to jump into the river following his lover. The people tried to prevent Siti Fatimah from jumping, but it was too late. Siti Fatimah threw herself into the river to find her lover. Raja Sriwijaya immediately shouted for the people to jump into the river, looking for Siti Fatimah and Tam Bun An. After hours and hours, people couldn't find them either. Knowing this, the King of Sriwijaya became very sad. Years after this incident, at the place where Tam Bun An and Siti Fatimah plunged into themselves, a sediment or delta emerged which continued to expand into an island. The people gave it the name Kemaro Island. Then the local people built a mosque and a temple to honor a pair of Putri Fatimah & Tam Bun Island is a small delta on the Musi River, Palembang, South Sumatra. This is a folk tale about Kemaro Island which is said to be related to the love story of a daughter of the king of Sriwijaya, Siti Fatimah, and a merchant from China, Tam Bun An.

In Palembang, the capital city of South Sumatera, there is a unique tourism object that I call as the mini version of Samosir Island. The actual name of the place I meant is Kemaro Island. I don’t say that without no reason, there’s something similar between them, the location. The difference is Samosir Island located in the middle of Toba Lake, the biggest lake in South East Asia, while Kemaro Island is located in the middle of Musi River, the fifth longest river in Indonesia. You may say that what I compared is too far, but at least that’s what I think. You may disagree with that. You can also read The Famous Legend of Hawang Cave What makes Kemaro Island more interesting for me is the story behind its presence. Long before I visited this island in Palembang last December, a friend of mine asked me not to forget to visit this place. She believed I would be happy to visit the place because this island has not only great view and buldings on it, but also an interesting story behind it. Ampera Bridge Traditional boat we used to go to Kemaro Island The view from the boat Kemaro Island’s dock Since I am not a “selfie-traveler”, I don’t really care about the view. What I do really care about is the story behind a place. In my opinion, the story has more value than the view, so when she said Kemaro Island has an interesting story, I took her advice and put Kemaro Island on my list. So once I stepped on Palembang, without any hesitation, I asked my guide who is also my friend, Deddy Huang, to take me to Kemaro Island. And when we got there, we met an old yet charismatic guy with his short white hair after passing the main gate. I knew he was the real deal, so I approached him, introduced myself, and then I asked about the story of this Island. And like a dog with two tails, the old man told the story that I asked. And here is the story ……. Tan Bun Ann and Siti Fatimah Hundred years ago, there was a beautiful princess named Siti Fatimah. She was a daughter of the king of Palembang kingdom at that time. Besides being beautiful, she also had a good character, polite, and how she spoke to others showed how smart she was. The beauty of Siti Fatimah absolutely made her had many admirers, especially men. Unfortunately, there was no man who had any balls to approach her and then taking her as his wife. Why it happened? Because she came from a royal family and her parents wanted her to get a spouse from the same level wealth. The king gave Tan Bun Ann a condition where he had to share a half of the profit to him. If Tan Bun Ann couldn’t do that, He should leave Palembang and find another place. Surprisingly, Tan Bun Ann undertook the terms from the king. Since then, once in a week, He must go to the castle to give what he had promised to the king. Apparently, this thing became the starting point where Tan Bun Ann saw and met the one and only beautiful princess in that castle, Siti Fatimah. From that time, Tan Bun Ann had the hots for Siti Fatimah and Siti Fatimah also felt the same way. They finally made a relationship. Feeling that she was the one, Tan Bun Ann was more than ready to step up to a new level. Then He went to the castle to meet the king and he expressed his desire to marry Siti Fatimah. The king gave him another condition. If he wanted to marry his daughter, Tan Bun Ann had to give him 9 jars that full of gold. Although it wasn’t an easy request, in the name of love, Tan Bun Ann accepted it. The Incident Together with Siti Fatimah, Tan Bun Ann sailed back to China to meet his parents. He wanted to ask for their blessing and also told them what the king wanted from him. Hearing that, his parents provided what their son needed to marry Siti Fatimah, the 9 jars that full of gold. Long story short, Tan Bun Ann and Siti Fatimah did another voyage back to Palembang with those 9 jars on his ship. For the security reason, the gold was covered by rotten mustard greens inside the jars. Tan Bun Ann’s father secretly did this, so Tan Bun Ann had no idea about this. When they had arrived in Palembang, on Musi River to be exact, Tan Bun Ann checked all of the jars before giving it to the king. He was pretty shocked when he knew what was inside it. Feeling cheated and full of disappoinment, Tan Bun Ann threw all the jars to the Musi River. Accidentally, when he wanted to threw the last jar to the river, he got slipped and then the jar was dropped and broken. Didn’t see any sign from his boss, one of Tan Bun Ann guards also jumped out of the ship. The result was the same, he also drowned and passed away. Siti Fatimah, who felt very anxious, ran immediately to the edge of the ship. She still had a big hope that her prince would make it to the surface. She had waited for so long and she couldn’t stand anymore. Then she did what Tan Bun Ann did, jumped out of the ship. As you have predicted, she ended up the same as two persons before her. But before doing the jump, Siti Fatimah had sent a message to the other guards on the boat. The message was “if there is a land that appeared in the middle of the river, That is their grave”. it’s me with the dragons If you wondering how the look from the inside of Pagoda The stairs inside the Pagoda Bird view of the Pagoda Just like what Siti Fatimah said, a couple days after their death, a small land appeared. Day by day, the land was getting bigger and bigger until it becomes a Kemaro Island like now that just 6 KM away from the iconic bridge of Palembang, Ampera Bridge. ****** That is the sad story behind Kemaro Island. To remember what have happened to Tan Bun Ann, his guard and Siti Fatimah, Chinese people in Palembang built a temple and tombs for them on it.
